Boy George opened his sold-out Tel Aviv show with Prince’s “Purple Rain.” Later that night, he dedicated “We Will Dance Again” to the victims of the Nova festival. For those of us who first heard the song together on Boy George FM, there was something moving about hearing it again through a fan’s recording, this time with a whole arena around it.

It was the first of two nights at Menora Mivtachim Arena. Kim Levi’s concert report put the crowd at 11,000 and placed Israeli singer Ivri Lider’s duet with George just three songs into the evening. Hannah Brown, writing for The Jerusalem Post, caught another detail: the merchandise had sold out before George even took the stage. Her report also features Shlomi Pinto’s Getty photographs of George on his own and alongside Lider.

According to the Hebrew-language review in Moadon Tarbut, the show ran about two and a half hours. There was room for “Church of the Poison Mind,” “Everything I Own,” “Time (Clock of the Heart)” and “Karma Chameleon,” as well as covers of Bowie, Wham! and the Rolling Stones. The reviewer called the evening “a small miracle of normality.”

A day earlier, George had visited the Nova memorial site and met survivors. On Wednesday night, the dedication brought that visit back into the room. For those watching from afar, a fan-recorded video of “We Will Dance Again” offers a chance to revisit the performance. Thank you to the fans sharing moments from the night. 💚

There was a quieter moment backstage, too. Kim Levi reports that jeweler and mentalist Yorini met George again after 30 years and gave him a necklace inscribed with Shema Yisrael. George spoke of the spiritual protection it gave him.

More from the night

George’s second Tel Aviv show is scheduled for Saturday, November 7, with guest DJ Ofer Nissim, and is dedicated to the Nova community and their families.
